Well, the good news is that you’re not alone !

Acne can affect people of all ages and is not just a problem for teenagers. In fact, around 50% of adults experience acne at some point in their lives.

In this blog post, we’ll cover the causes of adult acne, how to treat it, and some tips for preventing it in the future.

What Causes Adult Acne?

Acne occurs when pores in the skin become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, leading to inflammation and the formation of pimples.

In adults, acne can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

Fluctuations in hormone levels, especially during menstruation or menopause, can lead to acne.

Increased stress levels can trigger oil production and lead to breakouts.

Consuming high-glycaemic foods, dairy products and foods rich in saturated fats can contribute to acne.

Some medications such as corticosteroids and lithium can cause acne as a side effect.

Skincare products

Skincare products containing pore-clogging ingredients like oil and silicone can exacerbate acne.

So how can you treat Adult Acne ?

If you’re struggling with adult acne, several treatment options are available.

Here are some of the most effective:

Topical treatments

Creams, gels, and lotions with salicylic acid or niacinamide can help unclog pores and reduce inflammation. Retinoids are becoming increasingly popular for treating skin anti-ageing and acne, giving you a double benefit. Retinol helps to increase cell turnover, and therefore the desquamation process of the skin results in an exfoliating effect. Benzoyl peroxide was once a popular ingredient for problem skin; however, due to EU legislation, it is no longer permitted in products in the UK & EU.

We recommend the following products from the AlumierMS medical-grade skincare range:

AlumierMD Retinol Resurfacing Serum

A treatment serum available in 0.25 – 1% retinol

AlumierMD Clarifying Cleanser

A Salicylic acid & oligopeptide-10 cleanser that exfoliates and clears pores whilst boswellia, honey and aloe soothe and hydrate skin, leaving it fresh, supple and comfortable.

AlumierMD HydraClarité Moisturiser

An ultra-light non-comedogenic & antioxidant-rich skin hydrating moisturiser for oily and blemish-prone skin. Additional ingredients such as Hinokitiol and sea whip soothe the skin and relieve redness and irritation, whilst Allantoin and honey maintain the skin’s moisture balance.

Oral Medications

A dermatologist or GP can prescribe oral medications such as antibiotics or hormonal medications to treat more severe cases of acne; however, these come with side effects, and it is strongly recommended to explore removing the possible causes and eliminating them where possible 1st.

In-clinic and salon Treatments

Chemical peels using AHAs and BHAs are highly effective in treating adult acne. The treatment uses a chemical solution to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores.

Phototherapy Treatments

IPL, laser and light therapies such as Dermalux Flex MD can reduce inflammation and kill the bacteria that cause acne; however, they do not deal with the cause. Therefore, effective skin care supported by light therapy treatments can be very effective in getting your skin on track.

Preventing Adult Acne

Preventing adult acne requires a multi-faceted approach. Here are some tips to help keep your skin clear:

    • Keep your skin clean – Wash your face twice daily with a gentle cleanser to remove oil and dirt. Always remove your makeup daily before bed, and avoid using face wipes because they only smear the dirt and debris around your skin, including bacteria!
    • Use non-comedogenic products – Choose skincare and makeup products labelled “non-comedogenic” that won’t clog pores.
    • Watch your diet – Avoid high-glycaemic foods, dairy, and saturated fats, which can contribute to acne.
    • Manage stress – Practice stress-reducing activities like yoga or meditation to keep stress levels in check.
    • Don’t pick at or touch your skin – Picking at pimples can worsen inflammation and lead to scarring.
    • Check out your washing powders – use a non-biological washing powder for pillowcases.

So remember, Adult acne is a common problem but doesn’t have to be permanent. You can get clear, healthy skin by understanding the causes of adult acne and implementing effective treatments and prevention strategies.

Remember to stay consistent with your skincare routine and be patient – it may take some time to see results.
